Cakes, Cakes, and More Cakes

You know when you have one of those days when you haven't posted anything on your blog for a while but you have a lot of stuff that you should have posted?  Then you wanna post everything but everyday life is trying to pull you away from the computer.  So I'm going to post and it's not gonna be pretty... this is my vomit of the mouth blog post of cakes...

Dan's birthday cake is a chocolate cake mix mixed with diet cherry cola.  That's it.  Bake according to package directions.  Filling is cherry pie filling.  Frosting is a tub of lite whip cream mixed with one small container of vanilla pudding.  Decorated with chocolate, silver dragees, and red gobstoppers.  Dan's name is made out of gumpaste cut out using my cricut cake machine that was purchased through Amazon.com for only $75... okay there was $25 for shipping too.
Ryan's is a similar cake but the cake is a Hershey Bar cake recipe that is very decadent.  Same type of frosting as Dan's and has gumpaste trees cut out using my Cricut cake

Saint Patty's Day cupcake.  White cake mix, diet 7up, and green food coloring, follow package directions for baking times, topped with lite whip cream, fondant clover, fondant gold pot, chocolate gold rocks, and a sour candy rainbow from Airheads Xtremes.

My April Fool's day joke of a carton of broken eggs when these are really cupcake minis, whipped cream, lemon curd, white candy coating in a greased plastic egg to make egg shells.  One important tip about the egg shell that I didn't figure out till after 3 dozen broken ones.  There are tiny holes in the plastic egg shell, use a toothpick to help push out your shell so that it will more likely come out whole.  I got this idea from a book I won at a local cup cake competition called What's New Cupcake?

When I got tired of make broken eggs I made these cute lemon curd filled cup cake minis with gummy citrus slices that I bought from walmart.

Easter cupcakes for my daughter's 1st grade class.  Chocolate covered chow mein noodles, cadbury milk chocolate eggs, and butterfly sprinkles.  Jellybean eggs in bird nest was a package of 12 that I bought at walmart.  Last on is frosting covered in toasted coconut and a Cadbury egg.

Okay I'm done now... see ya in my next blog post.

Tinkerbell Cake II

My husband's co-worker discussed her dilemma with purchasing a cake at a local grocery store in Nome and the costs associated with it.  She was going to purchase a regular sized sheet cake with edible tinkerbell picture laid on top and her daughter's name written.  The price? $80.00!!!

My husband then called me and asked if I was willing to do a tinkerbell cake for $80.00.  This is what I came up with.

Strawberry cake with tundraberry filling frosted with butter cream and gum paste decorations.  Much better than a boring dumb sheet cake ;-)

There's me delivering a cake.

Normally I don't sell cakes and only make them for family members.  There's too much stress involved when someone wants to buy a cake from me, but this was a lot of fun and I enjoyed making this cake.

Not in my nature...

Christmas was suppose to be simple and easy this year.  I told my sister that I was going to have the kids help and just do chocolate covered pretzels.  She knew better, I wouldn't be able to resist... simple and easy is just not in my nature.  So I made these beautiful chocolate pretzel rods which 1 out of 4 of my children helped  (I'm too much of a perfectionist and worry about messes they would make).  I also had help with my friend, Lauren, she was awesome.

I even brought out my Cricut Cake machine and used the Doodle Charm cartridge to make cute Santa, Rudolph, and Tree fondant cut outs.

Oh but I couldn't just stop here.  I decided to made homemade Hot chocolate mixes using Nestle rich chocolate mix, creamer, instant milk powder, powdered sugar, and cinnamon.  I wrapped individual servings in small cellophane bags, added a small bag of mini marshmallows, and a candy cane (sorry no picture).

BUT THAT's NOT ALL...

I had to make these cute gingerbread houses that I found on pinterest...

AND THEY SIT ON THE RIM OF THE HOT CHOCOLATE MUG... HOW COOL IS THAT!
Anyways, I can't take all the credit so go to this link http://www.notmartha.org/archives/2009/12/18/a-gingerbread-house-that-perches-on-the-rim-of-your-mug/ to get instructions and patterns for this cute little house.

Simple and easy ;-)

Nome Pioneer Christmas

I work for Norton Sound Health Corporation who was putting on a competition for departments to build a gingerbreadish structure as a department team.  We came up of with an early 1900's Nome, Alaska pioneer theme.  There were 6 departments in total that entered.  We by far won the competition.

From left to right here are some pictures of the structures:
The Dog house and dog named Nugget was created by Stephanie Fahey using gingerbread, pretzels, royal icing, and fondant.

The main house is made with gingerbread, pretzel sticks, chocolate rocks fondant, royal icing, and life cereal.  Rocks and pretzels arranged by Stephanie Fahey and myself (Kim), Roof tiles by Rhonda Schneider using Life cereal.  Gingerbread design and pattern was created and baked by Kim.

This is what you see when looking into the door of the main house.
A family on Christmas morning.

Did you notice details? Bunny slippers.  Milk and cookies on a table made by Yorise Olson.  Family made by Kim, presents by Yorise, Christmas picture by Rhonda.  Candles by Kim.

Baby Butt Cake

I made this for my friend Lindsay's baby shower.  It's a carrot cake covered with cream cheese frosting and the butt is make with cake baked in a bowl.  Feet are made using store bought rice krispie treats covered in fondant.
